based in QLD
Kathryn (Kat) Apel is the author of ten books for children; rhyming picture books and verse novels. Her verse novel, Bully on the Bus won the Australian Family Therapists’ Award, was awarded an American Notable Social Studies Trade Book, and is on many bullying resource lists both within Australia, and America, while other books have listed in the CBCA and Speech Pathology Awards.
A former teacher and literacy coach (and Mum to two grown boys), Kathryn presents author talks and workshops across a range of genres and ages, from young children to adult. She has presented at both the Sharjah International Book Fair, and Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (UAE), and undertaken a 3-week tour of America, presenting at schools and community events. In 2025 Kathryn spent two weeks volunteering in the Solomon Islands, working with children and adult learners.
Kat is passionate about poetry, both as a means of creative expression — for writers of all ages and abilities — but also as a tool to develop writing muscle, across all genres. Kat’s website offers a rich array of activities to support her books and inspire creativity in kids and adults.
