Melody Horrill is an award-winning Australian environmental broadcast journalist and author of three books. She is well-known in South Australia for raising awareness about dolphins, marine conservation, and environmental issues. She is the co-chair of the Jane Goodall Institute’s global Cetacean Committee and Ambassador for Kangaroo Island Dolphin Watch. She lives in Melbourne with her rescue cat, Q, and her partner Grant. She is a passionate animal and nature love.
Her memoir, A Dolphin called Jock, published by Allen and Unwin in 2022 explores her struggles growing up in a household dominated by extreme domestic violence. The book focuses on her extraordinary friendship with a wild, injured dolphin which helped her heal, connect with the natural world, and discover her place within it. I was republished internationally by Greystone Press under a new title The Dolphin Who Saved Me . Her story was included in Martin Clune’s new book ‘Meetings with remarkable animals’ and ‘Jane Goodall at 90’. Her internationally acclaimed memoir was endorsed by Dr Jane Goodall DBE.
Her second book, a young adult fantasy titled A Cat Called Q and the Magic Globe also focuses on themes of connecting with nature and animals. It explores the power of discovering and believing in inner magic, even during challenging times.
Her third book, a non-fiction titled Sheltered, is a series of 32 real-life short stories that explore the power of love between people and their adopted animals. It highlights how rescue animals change, enrich, and sometimes save the lives of those who care for them. Endorsed by Dr Jane Goodall and Lady Primrose Potter, the book was released by Ultimo Press in late 2024. Melody has a deep love for nature and the ocean and spends as much time as possible by the sea. She also enjoys cooking and hanging out with her rescue cat Q.
