Dr Helen Edwards is an award-winning children’s author. She writes stories that reduce stereotypes, increase understanding of diversity, and feature Australian nature and history. Helen has a PhD in Psychology and a long background in mental health. She is a SA State Library Fellow in 2025. Helen has written a self-published picture book Diabetes Can’t Stop Me and two magical historical middle-grade novels published with Riveted Press. In 2024 her time-slip novel The Rebels of Mount Buffalo longlisted in the DANZ Awards and shortlisted in the Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year. Legend of the Lighthouse Moon was published on 2nd October 2025. Rich with folklore and brimming with adventure, it’s a dazzling tale of family, resilience, and the enduring magic of the sea. Set on Kangaroo Island in 1970, with a main character with type 1 diabetes, it features the history of the Cape Willoughby lighthouse and the endangered sea lion colony. Her fourth book On Gallant Wings is out on 2/4/25. It’s a sweeping WWII adventure about family, courage, and knowing when to break the rules, which shines a spotlight on many little-known aspects of the war’s impact on Australians at home.
