Set around the Great Garbage Patches, mid ocean, Hazel’s latest YA novel Wasted? has innovative Asylum Seekers trading bio-fuel for visas and turning to science to solve problems. Teenager Kit uses his caricaturing skills to illustrate a new world. The scientific research and writing took Hazel one year, from Jan 1st-Dec 31 of 2023.

Although known for Thereʼs a Hippopotamus on Our Roof Eating Cake series, Hazel Edwards writes across genres and has an OAM for literature. Social issues novels include Fake ID which was screen optioned and translated into Tamil .

Her Australian Antarctic expeditioner experience was relevant for the YA Asylum-seeker Utopian novel Wasted? #Clific setting and also the earlier Antarcticaʼs Frozen Chosen.

Interested in innovative projects , including use of AI in ‘Go! Go! Gecko’ which was initially a birthday gift of the imagination for Darwin grandsons, but developed into translations and use of AI for illustrations, not photos to protect online privacy of her young family.

Hazel’s books have been translated into ten languages and currently she’s working on adaptation of earlier books to screen. Her Amba Press collections of class scripts are widely used, especially ‘Kaleidoscope of Ideas’for gifted students.

She is also a writing mentor and her adult students call themselves Hazelnuts when they have finished.  ‘Not Just a Piece 0f Cake; Being an Author” is her quirky memoir.

Her bad hobby is she reads in the bath.
