Finegan has had 105 commissioned plays performed on every continent and translated into ten languages. He is a recipient of seven Australian Writers Guild Awards, the Mickey Miners International Lifetime Achievement Award for services to theatre for young audiences (its youngest ever recipient), the David Williamson Award for Excellence in Australian Playwrighting, and an inaugural Sidney Myer Creative Fellowship. In addition, Finegan’s work has received 41 awards, at least one each year since 2002.

His plays have had seasons in 200 festivals, all Australian states/territories, and at the Sydney Opera House (eight works), New York’s Lincoln Center (three works), DC’s Kennedy Center (three works), Dublin’s Abbey Theatre (two works), Prague’s National Theatre, and Shanghai’s Malan Flower Theatre.

Finegan has delivered papers and sat on panels at festivals in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Denmark, England, India, Indonesia, Scotland, Sweden and the US, with plays studied in many international universities, and an anthology of his scripts published.

In July 2024 his first novel, The End and Everything Before It was published by Text – a month later, following strong sales and glowing reviews, it was reprinted for a second run. In 2025 Finegan speaks at a number of writers festivals around Australia and overseas.
