Cheryl is from the Kooma and Nguri nations in western and central Queensland and is passionate about language revitalisation—often writing in her Kooma language.

An award-winning writer working across non-fiction, poetry, and children’s literature, Cheryl’s first bilingual children’s book, Yanga Mother, was published by UQP in 2024.

A current Queensland Museum Fellow and Queensland Writers Fellow, Cheryl has been commissioned by Camerata (Queensland’s chamber orchestra), the Institute of Modern Art, Queensland Art Gallery and Kanazawa 21 contemporary art museum in Japan.

Cheryl has judged several literary awards including the 2024 Stella Prize and is a sought after chair and facilitator at writers festivals and cultural events across Australia.
