From August 22-28 join schools, libraries and bookstores around the country in celebrating the CBCA’s Book Week.
Reading for pleasure has a range of benefits for children and young people. Regular reading enhances literacy skills, improves mental health, and helps children understand themselves and the world around them.
Despite these benefits, children’s participation in reading for pleasure has showed a downward trend in Australia – with the latest research showing 1 in 3 Australian children can’t read proficiently, 29% of Australia second school students don’t reading for pleasure at all.
National events such as Children’s Book Week are an opportunity for schools and communities to come together around the shared value of reading for pleasure, and to promote reading as an enjoyable and social activity for children and young people.
This year’s theme is ‘Symphony of Stories’ and features creative artwork from Australian illustrator Briony Stewart.
