Liz Bennett

Author of Picture Books

based in NT

Since she was a kid, Liz Bennett’s mind has been full of ideas about books for kids. She handcrafted her first picture book (Phil Smyth and the Squeakers – the thrilling tale of a mouse basketball champion) when she was twelve, as a gift for her little brother. Her first picture book not involving use of a stapler and coloured pencils, It’s Time for Slime!, was published by Starfish Bay Publishing in 2025 – and she has another in development with the same publisher.

Liz lives in Darwin/Garramilla. She has worked as a lawyer, social worker and mediator; but now that her own kids have left home she’s focusing on writing – which she particularly loves to do on the veranda of her tropical house-on-stilts. Liz also loves discussing writing and books with young people and is looking forward to her second year as coordinator of the NT’s Children’s Book Council of Australia Shadow Judging program.

In her spare time Liz – a keen movie fan – enjoys being part of the team behind Darwin’s iconic Deckchair Cinema, as well as singing in a choir and slowly attempting to learn the ukulele (don’t worry – she won’t bring it with her!).
